Do you think you have to rough-it in youth hostels when visiting Central America? Think again!

Central America is known for its cultural riches, colorful markets, warm and welcoming people as well as some of the most impressive ancient ruins anywhere in the world. As it’s a little off the beaten path from the mainstream tourism hotspots, the region typically appeals to the more culturally aware, open-minded traveler. Many people who are interested in visiting the region think that they’ll have to ‘rough-it’, sleeping in hotels of questionable quality, youth hostels aimed at gap year backpackers, or worse. Nothing could be further from the truth…

A recent surge in interest by foreign travelers in the region has led to some amazing new properties opening in every Central American country. Some of these exceed world-class 5 star standards, however they maintain the unique style, architecture and ambiance of their region. These style of hotels are far removed from the bland, cookie-cutter chain hotels many travelers stay in when visiting Latin America. They are ‘boutique hotels’, simply defined as high quality, unique, intimate hotels that complement the culture and style of the country in which they are located. Some of these are small establishments of fewer than five rooms, making guests feel as if they are staying in an exclusive private house more than a hotel, while others have thirty or more rooms, all individually designed. They feature comfortable beds, high quality bathroom fixtures, unique local furnishings reflecting the style of the region, as well as modern conveniences such as iPod docks and flat screen televisions.

Many of these hotels serve gourmet meals of a very high standard, featuring the local produce and cuisine of the region. Much of the produce is sourced directly from farmers within a few miles of the properties, so you know that the food you are eating is fresh and free from hormones, additives and preservatives.
